How is Applesauce Made?
Apple sauce is made by cooking apples down until very soft. You can either peel, chop and core the apples or you can use a good mill after the apples are cooked. It’s that easy.
You can also sweeten and flavor it with honey and cinnamon if you’d like. I’m sure there’s a billion ways to flavor and sweeten it. You can also have fun with the different types of apples! I just use any organic apples that are on sale usually. I’ll be using a sweeter variety of apples for this recipe for a no sugar added applesauce.
Why make your own applesauce?
Making apple sauce is a good way to use up your apple before they go to waste. You can also preserve them while they are in season by making Apple sauce and canning them! I plan on having an apple tree one day so I can can so many apple goodies.
Equipment
- Instant Pot
- food mill
Ingredients
- 4-5 Apples (any variety)
- 1/4 cup of water
- flavoring like honey or cinnamon if desired*
How to make homemade applesauce
Wash 4-6 apples (any kind, I like a sweet variety and organic)
Rough chop the apples to help them fit in the instant pot or leave them whole if you have a large enough pot (I’ll be using the 3 quart pot). Or you can peel and core the apples if you don’t have a food mill or strainer
Stick all the apples and 1/4 cup of water in the pot
Pressure cook for 30 minutes
Let rest for a natural release for a few minutes just so you don’t have flying applesauce.
Put apples through a food mill (if you already peeled and corded the apples then you can skip this step.
Smash if necessary, and add in any flavoring or sweeteners if desired
Cool and ENJOY! Store in you refrigerator for up to a week or can for long term use
This recipe is simple to dough or even triple so you can make enough for your whole family. Its so simple, just add as many apples as you’d like. No need for extra water though, the apples will create their own juices and it’ll become watered down.
It’s that simple! We like to put them in reusable pouches so our toddler can easily eat it. Or can them for long term storage. I hope you enjoy this super easy applesauce recipe!
