The Journey
This natural carpet freshener was actually one of the first natural swaps I made as a new homemaker. I was fascinated by both saving as much money as I could and being able to make cleaning supplies on my own! At the time, I really wasn’t looking much into natural living but quickly fell in love with the natural lifestyle. I am very lucky I found this lifestyle as a young, newly starting out homemaker. This made the transition A LOT easier. I was already having to learn the rolls as a homemaker so learning how to be a natural minded homemaker wasn’t a total mind switch. I didn’t have to unlearn and relearn, so I’m very thankful for that.
Why make your own natural carpet freshener?
Reduce the Toxic Load
So why would you make carpet freshener when you can just by it at the store? Carpet fresheners along with many cleaning products have a ton of toxins. Even the ones that look like they are harmless! Most of them have fragrance in them and this alone is a huge toxin.
Save Money
Another reason is its SOOO cheap. Literally you can buy a huge bag of banking soda for less then $10 at Sam’s Club or Costco. You could deodorize your whole house like 50 times! You can also use Baking soda for so many other homemade natural cleaning products as well.
Customization
You can customize the carpet freshener with essential oils, making it perfect for everyone. You can make this natural carpet freshener however you’d like. Using something like lavender will be safe for littles and very calming. Young livings thieves oil is great for sanitizing and cleansing. Create a blend that deters pests as well! Just be sure to do your own research because you do not want to use something that will be harmful to little ones or toxic to your pets. Remember our pets also have a much more sensitive sense of smell then us humans.
How to make Homemade Natural Carpet Freshener?
MATERIALS for Natural Carpet Freshener
- Baking Soda
- Essential Oils – I use young living
- Cheese shaker or any container with little holes. (I’m using a little mason jar cup with holes poked in the top this time as I have misplaced my shaker)
TOOLS for Natural Carpet Freshener
- Vacuum cleaner to clean – I love my Dyson cordless vacuum but obviously use whatever you have! The one I have linked is one of the newest versions but I have an older one that works great as well.
INSTRUCTIONS
Put 1 cup baking soda into the shaker
Next add 10-20 drops of essential oils. This is optional, but makes a great addition and smells wonderful.
Cover the top and shake. You can do this by putting the top on and covering the holes with tape or your hands so that no powder flies out.
Let sit for a few minutes so that the oils will infuse with the baking soda.
Sprinkle powder onto a clean rug or carpet
Let the freshener sit for 30-60 minutes.
Vacuum up the Baking soda. Go over the carpet one or two more times so you are sure you got it all up
ENJOY YOUR FRESH CARPETS!
NOTES
- This recipe is very forgiving so feel free to double it. Sometimes I don’t even measure. Just be Sure not to add too much oil as oils are very strong.
- This is also perfect for freshening up mattresses or cushions!
- Use any oils you’d like. Make sure they are high quality oils though!
- Use a single oil or a blend of oils.
- You can customize your Deodorizer to your needs and preferences.
- My favorite is Young Livings Thieves oil for deodorizing and sanitizing plus it smells incredible!
- Some Essential oils aren’t safe for little ones or pets so keep that in mind when adding your oils or you can go oil free
- If you have little ones or pets do this while they are out of the room until its vacuumed up!
