I have never been a real big fan of a cold sandwich and neither has my husband. But I do love me a hot sandwich with ooey gooey melted cheese in between nicely toasted homemade bread slices. This is an easy recipe that will get a hot meal on your table in no time.
Why I love using the waffle iron for sandwiches
Multi Use Tool
The waffle iron is the best for making hot sandwiches. ESPECIALLY if you do not have a panini press or some other type of fancy sandwich maker. BUT you can’t make a waffle in a panini press so I think the waffle maker is the better option and then its a multi use tool for your kitchen!
Quick and Easy
The waffle iron makes it so quick and easy to make a grilled sandwich with little hands on work! I just assemble my sandwich any way I like (or my toddler likes) and pop them right onto the waffle iron. It only takes about a minute and then you can enjoy your perfectly even toasted sandwich that is melted all the way threw! I don’t know about you but I always burn at least one side of my sandwich before the inside is fully ready.
Great for Soups
A big reason I love making waffle iron grilled sandwiches is that they make the best grilled cheese for tomato soup. The little indentions are perfect pockets for dipping into the soup.
Tools you may need
Waffle Iron – I have this large waffle iron that works perfectly for this!
Silicone tongs so you don’t scratch the waffle maker
Grain Mill and/or Stand mixer for making your own sandwich bread (click here to see 5 WAYS TO MAKE HOMEMADE BREAD BETTER
Good bread knife or bread slicing tool so you can make the perfect sliced bread
Ingredients for Waffle Iron Grilled Sandwiches
Sliced bread – a fun bakery bread or artisanal loaf works great but I prefer a home made sandwich loaf or sourdough.
Butter – preferably grass fed
Cheese of any kind – I like a grass-fed or raw cheese, but this is a great way to personalize and experiment with ne combinations!
Sandwich meat- any kind will due. I really like a specialty deli meat but I also think a home cured sugar ham would taste phenomenal.
Any other veggies or condiments you might like. Make it your own! This would be a good time to use up some veggies from the garden as well!
How to Make Waffle Iron Grilled Sandwiches
Have all your ingredients ready to go!
First spread some butter on one side of all you bread slices.
Next layer your first slice onto the waffle iron (buttered side down).
Quickly layer your meats and cheeses! I like to put a layer of cheese against the bread on both parts of the sandwich.
Top with the second piece of bread, but with the buttered side up this time.
Close the waffle iron and let it do its thing! I like to use a pot holder to press down a bit.
When the ready light comes on open up the waffle iron and see if the sandwich is toasted to your liking.
Lastly use your silicone tongs to get your ooey gooey sandwich out! Be careful it’s hot!
That’s it! enjoy your delicious hot sandwich! Its so easy that your kids can help you do it!
